California’s population is expected to grow to nearly 50 million people by 2050.The groundbreaking Vision California project explored the role of land use and transportation investments in meeting the environmental, fiscal, and public health challenges facing California over the coming decades. Funded by the California High Speed Rail Authority and the California Strategic Growth Council, Vision California initiative sought to reconcile the State’s energy, water, fiscal, and public health challenges with the rapid economic growth and a critical need to meet greenhouse gas reduction targets.
Solution: Comparative Scenarios Map the Way to 2050 Greenhouse Gas Reduction Target.

UrbanFootprint was deployed to generate and compare the fiscal, environmental, and public health impacts of a full range of statewide land use scenarios. Fine-grained physical scenarios critically assessed how varying land use and infrastructure investments can meet state goals for reducing greenhouse gas emissions as well as broader objectives related to open space, farmland preservation, community health, mobility, housing affordability, energy and water conservation, and more.
